Failed the road test? What happens next in Ohio

By Right Route Driving School, , 4 min read

Under 21, you wait two days. From 21, a first fail on a first license means a short required course, unless you trained in the last year. Then you book again.

A failed driving test is a bad morning, not a setback of months. The BMV's rules for what comes next are short and depend on one thing: whether you are under 21 or 21 and older.

Under 21: wait two days

An applicant under 21 who fails a driving or skills test must wait two days before retesting. Nothing else is required: the training you completed stays effective, and you schedule a new appointment through BMV Online Services or at a driver exam station.

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office answers the question families ask next: the training you completed does not expire because of a failed test while you are under 21.

21 and older: a short course before the retest

An applicant for an initial license who is 21 or older and fails the first attempt at the maneuverability or road portion must take an abbreviated adult driver training course before the second attempt (Ohio Traffic Safety Office, adult drivers), unless, as the Ohio Driver Manual says, they had an approved driver education course within one year before the test, with proof of it presented before testing again.

The course is one of four:

  • A 4-hour in-person class, then 4 hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor at a licensed abbreviated adult school.
  • A 4-hour state-approved online course, then the same 4 hours with an instructor.
  • A 4-hour in-person class, then 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver 21 or older.
  • A 4-hour online course, then those 24 hours.

On the 24-hour options, you cannot complete more than four hours of driving in one day, and the hours go on the BMV 5789 Twenty-Four Hour Affidavit, notarized; a notarized 5789 with the log from the RoadReady Ohio app is also accepted. Bring the course certificate (and the affidavit, if it applies) to the second attempt.

If the second attempt also fails, no second course is required; you wait at least two days and test again. Our Adult Abbreviated Course is the class plus four hours with an instructor.

Use the days on the six things the examiner scores

Ask yourself where the points went. On the road, the examiner scores six things: stopping and starting, turning around and backing up, turns, turn signals, the correct lane, and a safe following distance. On the course, it is the two steps through the markers.

  • Points for stops? Practice stopping behind the line, fully, every time, and starting without a lurch.
  • Points for lane or signals? Drive a route with many turns and say the signal and the lane out loud before each one.
  • Points on the maneuverability course? Set it up in a lot and run it until five clean passes in a row are normal.

The road test guide and the maneuverability guide go through each part in detail.

Check the car before the second try

An inspection is performed before the test begins. The manual's list: turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and headlights all working; front doors that open from inside and outside with the handle; current registration displayed on the plate; and automated assistance such as automated parking switched off.

If the car was part of the problem, or you would rather not borrow one twice, our Road Test Car + Practice package provides the car and a warm-up on the roads around your exam station before the appointment.

Book again

Schedule through BMV Online Services or in person at a driver exam station. Designated testing locations that work with the BMV may charge a fee to run the skills test. What to bring:

  • Under 21: the TIPIC, the completed 5791 and the driver education certificate, again.
  • 21 and older: the TIPIC and the abbreviated course certificate; on a 24-hour option, the notarized BMV 5789; on a Limited Term permit, the 5791 too.

Then drive the route you can: the one from your door to the exam station, at the hour of the test, twice.
