Adult Abbreviated Course, Adults 21+

The abbreviated adult course

Aged 21 or older, applying for your first license, and failed your first road or maneuverability test? Ohio requires an abbreviated adult course before the second attempt: a 4-hour class, then 4 hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor. The class and the driving together are $460.

Who it's for

  • Adults 21 and older applying for a first Ohio license who failed the maneuverability or road portion of their first driving test.
  • Not required if you finished a driver training course in the 12 months before the failed test: bring that certificate to the retest instead.
  • The class comes first, online or in person. Then either 4 hours with our instructor, or 24 hours with a licensed driver 21 or older, no more than 4 a day, on the notarized BMV 5789 affidavit.
  • Fail the second attempt? No second course: wait at least two days and test again.

Common questions

All questions

What's the abbreviated adult course?

Ohio requires it if you're 21 or older, applying for your first license, and fail your first attempt at the maneuverability or road test, unless you finished a driver training course in the 12 months before. It's a 4-hour class (online or in person), then either 4 hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor, or 24 hours of practice with a licensed driver aged 21 or older recorded on the BMV 5789 affidavit.

What if I fail my driving test?

Under 21: wait two days, then retest. 21 or older on your first license: complete the abbreviated adult course before your second attempt, unless you finished driver training in the 12 months before.

What's on the Ohio driving test?

Two parts: a road test (starting, stopping, turns, signals, lane position, following distance, backing up) and a maneuverability test, where you drive forward through a 9 by 20 foot box of markers and then back through it. Knocking down or running over a marker is an automatic fail.
