Limited Term Course, Temporary U.S. residents, any age
The Limited Term license course
Since June 30, 2025, Ohio requires temporary residents of any age to finish a Class D course and 50 hours of supervised practice before the driving test: 24 hours of class, online or in person, and 8 hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor. The license is non-renewable, non-transferable and lasts as long as your legal stay. With the online class, the course is $730.
Who it's for
- Anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident but has legal presence in the country. Any age.
- Aged 21 or older with an unexpired license from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan? Ohio exempts you from the course and the practice hours; present the license when you apply.
- With a license from another country and an Ohio TIPIC, you practice only with a licensed driver 21 or older.
- Driving lessons start after the class, with your TIPIC in the car: Ohio's driving school rules give no lesson before the class is finished, or to a student who does not hold and carry a valid permit or license.
Checked by Right Route, an Ohio-licensed driving school, on November 1, 2026.

Common questions
What documents do I need for a Limited Term license?
Proof of your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number (if assigned), Ohio address and legal presence, such as your passport with visa or immigration documents. You also need the completed, notarized BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit. If you hold a current license from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, Ohio exempts you from the course and practice hours.

What's in the Class D course?
24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor. It's the same course for teens, for 18–20 year olds and for Limited Term drivers. On top of the course, Ohio requires 50 hours of practice driving, at least 10 at night, recorded on the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit.

Is the class online?
Yes. The class is available online and self-paced, and some courses also have an in-person option. All driving lessons are in the car with our instructors.
Do I need my permit with me at driving lessons?
Yes. Ohio's driving school rules say we can't give you a lesson unless you have a valid temporary permit or license with you. Bring the card itself: the Ohio BMV says its Mobile ID doesn't replace it.

Are you approved by the state of Ohio?
Yes. The Ohio Department of Public Safety licenses Right Route Driving School for Class D driver training (teens, 18–20 year olds and Limited Term) and for the abbreviated adult course, license 4366. You can find us on the state's lists of approved schools.
