Driving in Columbus
The outerbelt
I-270 circles the city in a loop of about 55 miles. Merging onto it at rush hour is the first freeway skill most new drivers need: build speed on the ramp, check your mirror and shoulder, and pick your gap early.
One-way pairs downtown
Third Street and Fourth Street run one way in opposite directions through downtown. Turning onto the right one, and from the correct lane, takes practice before you have to do it with a bus behind you.
Where I-70 and I-71 meet
On the south edge of downtown the two interstates share a short stretch of freeway, with exits close together. Reading the overhead signs early and staying in your lane is the whole lesson.
Neighborhood streets
Narrow streets with cars parked on both sides, four-way stops and people on foot are part of most Columbus drives. Slow, steady and looking well ahead is the habit to build.
Practice drives with a parent
Start your teen on a quiet residential street on a weekend morning, then build up: a main road with traffic lights, a loop on Third and Fourth Streets downtown when traffic is light, and a short run on I-270 between two exits. Save the stretch where I-70 and I-71 run together for last, when lane changes no longer feel rushed. Mix in some drives after dark as you go.
