Step 3

The Ohio road test, step by step

The Ohio driving test has two parts, maneuverability and on-road, scheduled through the BMV once your training is done. You bring your permit, a car in good condition and, under 21, the notarized BMV 5791.

Before you can book

The driving test comes after the training the law asks of you, and that depends on your age and permit.

  • Under 18: the Class D course (24 hours of class, 8 behind the wheel), 50 hours of practice with 10 at night, and the permit held for at least six months.
  • 18 to 20: the same course and the same 50 hours, since September 30, 2025; no six-month wait.
  • 21 and older with an ordinary permit: the permit and a car. No course is required before the first try.
  • Limited term permit holders, any age: the Class D course and the 50 hours, since June 30, 2025 (holders of an unexpired license from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan are exempt).

On the day you bring your permit, the completed BMV 5791 affidavit if you are under 21 or hold a limited term permit, and your driver education certificate (under 18 it must be provided; at 18 to 20 the BMV may ask for it if it cannot verify the course electronically).

Booking the test

Schedule through BMV Online Services (the "Schedule a Driving or Skills Test" tile) or in person at a driver exam station. The BMV also works with designated testing locations that are authorized to collect a fee for giving the skills test.

Book once the training is done, not before: the state asks for the completed affidavit when you schedule, and again at the test. A date on the calendar is a good motivator, but a rushed test is the usual reason for a second one.

The car

You provide a vehicle in good condition, and the examiner inspects it before the test starts: turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and headlights all work; both front doors open from inside and outside with the handle; the registration is current and shown on the plate. Automated assistance such as automated parking must be switched off. Check the lights and the horn the day before, with someone outside the car to confirm each one.

If the family car is a worry, our road test package provides the car for the test, with a warm-up on the roads around your exam station first, so you test in a car you have just driven.

Two parts: maneuverability and driving

The road test has two parts. The maneuverability test is driven through a box of markers, forward and then backward; it has its own guide. The on-road part is driven in traffic with the examiner in the front passenger seat giving directions.

On the road the examiner watches you stop and start, turn around and back up, make turns, use the turn signals, stay in the correct lane and keep a safe following distance. There is no trick in it: the test checks the habits the manual describes, done calmly every time. Signal at least 100 feet before every turn and signal every lane change, check mirrors and the blind spot out loud if it helps, come to a full stop behind the line, and leave three to four seconds to the car ahead. A slow, careful drive passes; a quick, confident one with a rolling stop does not.

If you do not pass

Under 21, you wait two days before testing again, and your training stays valid: no further course. Use the two days on whichever part went wrong, in the same car.

At 21 or older, applying for a first license, a failed first attempt at either the maneuverability or the road portion means you complete an abbreviated adult driver training course before the second attempt, unless you finished a driver training course in the previous 12 months.

The course is a 4-hour class, in person or online, followed by 4 hours with a licensed instructor, or by 24 hours with a licensed driver 21 or older logged on a notarized BMV 5789 affidavit (four hours a day at most). Our adult driving lessons program is that course: the 4-hour class and 4 hours behind the wheel with our instructors.

After you pass

Go to a deputy registrar within 60 days to buy the license, with the acceptable documents for your name, date of birth, Social Security number, residency and legal presence, and the BMV 5791 if you needed one. You surrender the permit. Under 18, a parent or guardian co-signs.

A driver under 18 gets a probationary license. For the first 12 months there is no driving between midnight and 6 a.m. unless a parent, guardian or custodian is in the car (or a licensed driver 21 or older named on a notarized BMV 2438, or with the employer's, school's or religious event's form), no more than one non-family passenger without a parent or guardian, seat belts for everyone and no mobile devices. After the first 12 months the night hours narrow to 1 to 5 a.m. At 18 the probationary rules lift.
