Teen Drivers Ed, Ages 15½–17
Drivers ed for Columbus teens
The full Ohio course for new drivers under 18: a 24-hour class online at your own pace, then 8 hours in the car with a licensed instructor who picks you up in our pickup areas. The full course is $550.
Who it's for
- Ohio teens getting a first license before they turn 18.
- Ohio lets you start the class at 15 years 5 months. Your temporary permit (TIPIC) comes at 15 years 6 months, after the BMV knowledge test and a vision screening.
- Driving lessons start after the class, with your permit in the car. Ohio's driving school rules require both.
- A parent or guardian books for a student under 18, and co-signs for the permit at the deputy registrar.
Checked by Right Route, an Ohio-licensed driving school, on November 1, 2026.

How long does it take to finish?
Most students finish the online class in 1–2 weeks. Driving lessons are usually done in 4–6 weeks, depending on your availability.
Do I need my permit with me at driving lessons?
Yes. Ohio's driving school rules say we can't give you a lesson unless you have a valid temporary permit or license with you. Bring the card itself: the Ohio BMV says its Mobile ID doesn't replace it.

How much does it cost? Do you offer payment plans?

What do I bring to the driving test?
Your temporary permit (TIPIC), a vehicle in good condition (it's inspected before the test), your driver education certificate, and, if you're under 21 or on a Limited Term permit, your completed BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit. Need a car? Rent ours for test day.
