Driving in New Albany

  1. SR-161 freeway

SR-161 runs as a limited-access freeway between New Albany and I-270. Its long, straight stretches are a calm place to practice steady speed and lane keeping. Keep right except to pass, and check your mirrors before every lane change.

  2. Roundabouts on Market Street

The village center has single-lane roundabouts, including a newer one at Market Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road. Slow down, yield to cars already inside, and signal your exit.

  3. Business park roads

Large business parks east of town bring trucks and shift-change traffic. Leave space and expect wide turns.

  4. The school campus

New Albany's schools sit close to the village center, so mornings and mid-afternoons bring buses, parents dropping off and students on foot. Slow down and expect crossing guards.

Practice drives with a parent

New Albany's leisure trails cross many driveways and side streets, so start in a quiet neighborhood and practice slow, careful scanning for joggers and cyclists. Then drive the Market Street roundabouts at quiet times until yielding and exiting are automatic. SR-161 makes a calm first freeway: long, straight and less crowded than the outerbelt. Drive near the business parks at shift change only once your teen handles trucks without tensing up.
