Road Test Car + Practice, Test day

A car for your driving test

Rent our car for the Ohio driving test and warm up first on the roads around your exam station, so the car and the area feel familiar when the examiner gets in. For Right Route students the car is $190.

Who it's for

  • Anyone with an Ohio driving test booked who needs a car that passes the BMV's inspection: working signals, brake lights, horn, wipers and headlights, front doors that open from inside and out, current registration on the plate.
  • Drivers who trained with another school or with family: the car is open to everyone.
  • Students who want one more practice of road-test skills and the maneuverability box before test day.
Ohio Driver Manual, section 11: taking the driving test

Checked by Right Route, an Ohio-licensed driving school, on November 1, 2026.

The route

  1. 1

    Exit 1

    Book the car

Choose the rental for your test date, once the BMV has given you one. Under 21 or on a Limited Term permit? Bring your notarized BMV 5791 to the test as well.

  2. 2

    Exit 2

    Warm up

A practice drive on the roads around your exam station: starts and stops, turns, lane position, backing up, and the 9-by-20-foot marker box.

  3. 3

    Exit 3

    Take the test

The examiner rides in the front passenger seat; you drive the car you just practiced in. Automated assistance such as self-parking is switched off, as the BMV requires.

Common questions

All questions

What's on the Ohio driving test?

Two parts: a road test (starting, stopping, turns, signals, lane position, following distance, backing up) and a maneuverability test, where you drive forward through a 9 by 20 foot box of markers and then back through it. Knocking down or running over a marker is an automatic fail.

What do I bring to the driving test?

Your temporary permit (TIPIC), a vehicle in good condition (it's inspected before the test), your driver education certificate, and, if you're under 21 or on a Limited Term permit, your completed BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit. Need a car? Rent ours for test day.

What if I fail my driving test?

Under 21: wait two days, then retest. 21 or older on your first license: complete the abbreviated adult course before your second attempt, unless you finished driver training in the 12 months before.

Are you approved by the state of Ohio?

Yes. The Ohio Department of Public Safety licenses Right Route Driving School for Class D driver training (teens, 18–20 year olds and Limited Term) and for the abbreviated adult course, license 4366. You can find us on the state's lists of approved schools.
